Accumulating Character: Time and Ethos in Rhetorical Theory Chair: Dana Anderson Committee: John Schilb, Freya Thimsen, Justin Hodgson, and Scot Barnett "Accumulating Character" argues that both rhetoric and theories of ethos can gain complexity by understanding how non-kairotic conceptions of time—especially ones that emerge from the ancient concept of chronos—impact rhetorical ecologies. Through the analysis of cultural texts and digital media, I develop a theory of "cumulative ethos" that highlights the ways that character accumulates rhetorical force over time.
